Welcome
to the red room
The Red Room is a female-owned community darkroom and photo studio based in Salt Lake City, Utah. We offer a range of services including darkroom rentals for RA-4 (color) and black & white printing, photography and alternative process workshops, and photo studio rental.
Meet the Team
The Red Room was created by three girls with a dream to create a space solely dedicated to art-making. Sarah, Jillian, and Angelique are fine-art photographers based in Salt Lake City. They first met as co-workers on a commercial photo team, and quickly bonded over their shared love for film photography and alternative printing processes.
This space was created with community at the forefront; we wanted to not only provide a creator's space for Salt Lake's already-established analogue photographers, but also a safe and supportive learning space for anyone interested in learning these processes for the first time.
We are the first and only community darkroom in Salt Lake City that offers color printing. Through much effort, we acquired a Durst RCP20 8X10 Machine Processor, which makes printing color in the darkroom a breeze. We also offer printing in black & white. All materials, besides paper, are provided. The consistency of our chemicals and equipment is very important to us - we can assure you that you will leave with a print that you are happy with.
We offer individual and group darkroom rentals, one-on-one demos in darkroom printing, group classes, and donation-based workshops on other alternative processes; such as cyanotype.
What we Offer
RA-4 Color
-
In a darkroom, color processing works by using color-sensitive photographic paper with multiple layers, each sensitive to a different primary color (red, green, and blue), which allows the light projected from a color negative to differentially expose each layer, creating a full-color print when developed with the appropriate chemicals; this process is often referred to as "RA-4" printing, where the paper essentially acts like a color filter, separating the color information from the negative into its component parts.
The color processor we use is a Durst RCP20- a tabletop, fully automatic photographic print processor manufactured by Durst, primarily used for developing color prints capable of handling prints up to 8x10 inches in size; it's known for its ability to be modified to use modern RA-4 color chemistry instead of older processing methods like EP-2 color.
Black & white Silver Gelatin
-
The gelatin silver print is a monochrome imaging process based on the light sensitivity of silver halides. They have been made for both contact printing and enlarging purposes by modifying the paper's light sensitivity. A brief exposure to a negative produces a latent image, which is then made visible by a developing agent. The image is then made permanent by treatment in a photographic fixer, which removes the remaining light sensitive silver halides. And finally, a water bath clears the fixer from the print. The final image consists of small particles of silver bound in a layer of gelatin.
Alternative-Process
-
Alternative process photography refers to any non-standard photographic printing technique, typically utilizing historical or non-silver based methods to produce unique images, often including processes like cyanotypes, salt prints, or photograms, which can be created without using a camera; essentially, it involves using methods outside of the traditional gelatin silver print process to create photographs with distinct aesthetics and textures
